If you are in a service-based business you have seen this happen. You give coaching to a client and nothing happens. No results. No momentum. Nada.
Or maybe you are on the other side and you aren’t seeing things happen. It’s frustrating isn’t it?
Why does this happen?
I’m going to give you the tips on how to get the most out of your coach, how your clients can get the most out of you, and how to hire the right coach. It’s way too much info to put in one newsletter so watch out for part 1, 2 and 3. Here is part 1:
This is why coaching doesn’t always work:
- Accountability – The person being coached has to have 100% accountability for their results. If they are stuck in blame, go missing in action and the only time they appear is to complain, then they aren’t ready to be the CREATOR of their life. They want someone to do it for them. They are stuck in victim-ville. Your results are because you either did something or didn’t do something.
- Coachability – Are you teachable? Do you accept the coaching you are given? If not, continue doing it your way so you get more of what you have. You don’t want what you have, right? It is time to do something different, and you can only do that if you are coachable. You are not always going to like what your coach has to say. That is okay. You pay top dollar for that, right? Lol! Seriously though, if your coach doesn’t piss you off or make you uncomfortable, at least once in a minor way, then you aren’t stretching enough. Possibilities are going untapped in your future.
- Willingness – Are you willing to change? You can say you want one thing, but you have to be willing to stop doing what you are doing and start doing something new to get a new result. If you don’t, you are wasting your time and money as well as your coach’s time that they could be spending on someone who is willing.
- Action – Take action. Consistently. Period. Intentions without action get you nowhere. Even when you attract the most magnificent opportunity ever because it’s on your vision board, in your Soul Vision Journal, in your Life Vision and on a post-it note on your bathroom mirror, you still MUST take action when you get that opportunity or it quickly turns into a “shoulda, coulda, woulda.”
Your coach can’t want your goals to happen more than you do. A good coach will mirror your effort. They won’t drag you along because then the results won’t be yours. These same principles apply if you are a coach. The biggest ah-ha’s you get are when you learn from your clients. When you show up accountable, teachable, willing and taking action then it sets the pace for your clients to model. It goes both ways. When you show up this way as a coach you are relatable and trusted.
Your first step to get the most out of your coach is to get clear on what you want. Then be totally accountable for your results and be willing to do something different so you get different results. If you don’t have a coach, then use these as stepping stones to get the most out of your investment when you hire one. To be honest, these tips also apply to your mastermind group, accountability buddy, and life in general.
