Have you had a moment that sounds like, “Maybe I just shouldn’t do this anymore? If this is what I was meant to do, it would have worked out by now.”
Or, “I should be further along than I am now.”
I get it. #beentheredonethat
I’ll get to why these moments are really great news in a moment.
First, hear this: this kind of questioning is normal and you’re not alone.
This can go for any area of your life, but specifically, I’m focusing this on your business.
Let’s face it, if we did the same thing over and over again, we’d die of boredom. So there is always an evolution of what’s next, even if you’re super content and blissed out at the moment.
This is why I work with what I call multi-faceted entrepreneurs. We can’t do just ONE thing for the rest of our lives. We have lots of things we’re good at and riding the waves of this continuous exploration is where the bliss is and it’s also where there is a lot of frustration and confusion.
I get this. I get YOU.
Case in point: This year has been a lot of “what’s next for me?” (okay, I’ve been in this stage my whole damn life.)
For example, it was a year ago that I brought art back into my life. This has changed me and opened up doors for “what’s next” in ways I never imagined.
I also spent months putting content into my signature Intuitive Marketing course. I stopped working with as many private clients. I came out of my event sabbatical and hosted CREATE, which was incredible.
The question of, “What’s next and how does it want to be expressed through me?” was really starting to get on my nerves. Okay, it was pissing me off and was incredibly self-defeating. (Like debilitating self-doubt came out of nowhere.)
I like to move fast. I don’t like being unclear. I seriously questioned if I should just stop doing everything I’d been building over the past 11+ years. It was the only thing that made sense if I was experiencing that level of frustration and doubt.
Hahahaha.. Joke’s on me. Through the unfolding of this process, dozens of people have reached out to me with very similar stories this year.
Should they just quit? Maybe they need to radically change what they are doing.
When you’re having moments of, “What do I want to be when I grow up? Maybe I should just quit,” it’s really great news and you’re not alone.
Why?
If you’re willing, It’s VERY effective (just really uncomfortable) at having you get quiet, take a look around and within, and ask yourself the more important questions, like:
“What really matters to me now?”
“Am I willing to be courageous enough to create it?”
These moments create the s-p-a-c-e to create, to play, to paint, to BE, to write, read, binge watch something, and take more baths while eating nachos (it’s my thing). I’ll be honest, anything involving nachos and I’m in. 🌮 Nacho-bath-time moments have inspired some epic downloads!
What do you do when you have space?
I used to fill up space with work. With frantically mapping out strategies that should work better next time. With networking. I filled my space with hustling.
It often sounded like, “Why can’t I figure this out? What’s wrong with me? Maybe I need to hire another coach, or try a new marketing strategy out, or rebrand…”
And then I would crash and do nothing, which gave me something else to judge myself.
It’s crazy-making and holy crap, no wonder I was exhausted.
So much chasing. So much hustling. So much self-judgment. So much distraction from what really mattered.
We can’t receive if there is no room.
What’s next in our lives and business can’t come to us when our schedule is so full we barely have time to prepare a lovely meal, let alone eat and enjoy it.
I get we all have things – maybe you’re a parent or taking care of a parent. Maybe you’re healing or navigating other life circumstances.
We get busy.
When you’re looking for what’s next, do you honestly give yourself the space to receive the clues and insight?
Why does this happen?
If you’ve wondered if you should just quit or you’re facing self-doubt or sabotage, here’s my theory of why this happens and why it’s really good news:
It opens up the s-p-a-c-e for you to receive what’s next. You cannot receive guidance, inspiration, or your next inspired idea if there is no room!
It pushes you into the discomfort of looking at what you are truly willing to do and be for the highest expression of your soul.
Are you willing to get a job if that serves you? Are you willing to fire that client even though they are your main income? Are you willing to raise your rates? Are you willing to be more visible?
Two Tips to Follow What’s Next For You:
1. What is filling up your life?
There is a saying in the financial guru world that goes something like this, “Show me your bank account and I’ll show you what’s a priority to you.”
Well, that’s easy:
Art supplies, books (because the 10 on my nightstand are not enough), contributing to causes that support equity and education for girls in developing countries, personal development, and delicious food and beverages. And the obvious of investing in my business.
The same saying goes for your calendar.
Show me your calendar and I’ll see if you’re a priority in your own life. I’ll also see if growing your business is truly a priority or if it’s an after-thought.
#busted
if you aren’t scheduling time for the things in your business like meditating/spiritual connection, moving your body (yes those two are directly contributing to your business) as well as: looking at your numbers, creating content, lead generation, sales calls, team meetings, etc. then can you really be upset if your business isn’t going the way you want it to?
That’s not about hustling and filling in your calendar, it’s about honoring your time and prioritizing what matters to YOU.
Clear out space in your calendar. We’re at the perfect time of year to block out time for 2020. What days of the week do you want to work, what hours? Go for it and block out the entire WEEK of your birthday. When do you create for you?
If you don’t schedule it in, your time will be occupied by other people’s priorities.
Tip #2: Make bold choices
First, take a moment and think about what you want to be doing ten years from now?
Maybe you don’t know. If you don’t have a clear picture, just lean into the energy of it. What does it feel like? Is it a more expanded and peaceful state? Just notice what you notice.
Now, here’s the question: What bold choices are you willing to make to have that sooner than later?
Boom.
My coach recently took me through this process… whoa. It put into motion things that I was resisting and I can’t wait to share some new things. Stay tuned.
So I leave you with this for today: what bold choices are you willing to make?
